School opens upgraded area By JIMMY NESS Fergusson Intermediate ushered in a new era last Tuesday as they opened part of their $7 million upgrade. The school has built a new edu- cation centre, which includes three syndicates with four classrooms in each, a central shared learning space, a small group/withdrawal room, resource rooms and separate toilet and changing rooms. Covered walkways will link the syndicates and extensive land- scaping will be carried out, while a walkway provides a link between the inner courtyard and the school s playing fields. The school had its 1960s class- room block demolished in Sept- ember 2010 and pupils moved into temporary classrooms on the school s recreation grounds. Principal Paul Patterson says he is pleased with the new devel- opment. The new classrooms really are a fantastic example of a 21st cen- tury learning environment and we are delighted with the brilliant job completed by all involved. We are equally delighted that Bill Birch, a foundation staff member, was here to assist student council chairperson, Georgiarose Robbins-Wells, in cutting the ribbon. In February, construction will begin on a new library and tech- nology suite due for completion next September. The latest work was designed by McKenzie Higham Architec- ture, built by Armstrong Downes Ltd and project-managed by Martin Watson of Retrac 1997 Ltd. Can you help police find valuable bike? Can you help? This valuable Conago C50 road-racing bicycle was stolen from a Mitsu- bishi wagon parked near the Totara Park Bridge on October 30. It is a carbon fibre bicycle, similar to the one pictured but had Campagnolo wheels, black handle bars and was predominantly white, with black and red stripes. Campag- nolo is written in large white lettering on the wheels. If you have any information to help police find the bicycle, contact Senior Constable Flora Nielsen at Upper Hutt police station on 527 2300. Greater Wellington ahead of target Wellington Regional Council has recorded an operating surplus of almost $1 million for the first two months of the year, ending August 31. It had budgeted a surplus of $167,000 for the period and the actual figure was $1,068,000. The major contributors were water catchment management and public transport. Environmental management and investment were the major costs that ran over budget. The council has adjusted its budget deficit forecast for the year ending June 30, 2012, down from $542,000 to $114,000.
