Photo: COLIN WILLIAMS By COLIN WILLIAMS For Project K graduates April Ma'a and Hannah Sipaia the future is brighter, more challeng- ing and full of goals and opportunities. April, Hannah and 10 other year 11 students from Heretaunga College recently completed the course with a graduation evening for the students, their parents, friends and supporters, teachers and all involved in the project, including their mentors. It was a culmination of a demanding and fulfilling 12 months under the nationwide Foundation for Youth develop- ment programme for 14 and 15-year-olds. Project K, which has been oper- ating in the Wellington region for 10 years, aims to develop students' self-efficacy and poten- tial through learning self-reliance, team-building, goal-setting and life skills. Another intake, for this year, is under way and April and Hannah say there is considerable respect for the project from their peers and staff at their college. It was really scary going into it,'' April says of her Project K start 12 months ago and particu- larly the three-week bush camp which is the inductees' first major event. But it was a major opportunity. It really helped me think about myaimsandwhatIwanttodoin the future and in setting goals for the future,'' April says. A community stage'' follows where the teams adapt the lessons learned in the bush as they carry out projects to explore resources, opportunities and support services in their home city before their carrying out further team challenges. Then, near the course com- pletion, the students set academic, health, fitness and personal goals for the next year. It pretty much makes you feel more confident,'' April says. You get to know what's right and wrong and your attitude changes.'' Hannah agrees. You get more motivated and you learn about leadership. I'm using [the skills] at school and also doing more things out of school.'' Founded in 1995 by Graeme Dingle and Joanne Wilkinson, Project K is a free programme. Selection follows all year 10 pupils carrying out a survey to work out who might benefit the most from the programme and after consultation with a college liaison team. A key part of the course is the partnering of the students with mentors in an ongoing connection. We got the opportunity to meet with them at the camp [which the mentors visited one afternoon] and to talk to them,'' April says. Through them we get to know ourselves and you just get closer and closer to them,'' Hannah says. They become someone you can talk to, someone that's not a parent,'' she says. I don't think it's going to end either. You can keep in touch,'' April says. Programme co-ordinator Kaio Afoa says Project K is a rewarding experience for all involved and he values the relationship developed with Heretaunga College. It's always pleasing to see the changes in the group over the year. They are an awesome group,'' he says.
