Photo: BILL PREBBLE Fifty years of research Coinciding with the last scheduled services by a New Zealand Rail (NZR) steam locomotive 40 years ago to the day, Auckland author Sean Millar chose Silver Stream Railway to launch his new book The NZR Steam Locomotive. Assembled guests heard speeches from New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society president Graeme Carter, Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand chairman Euan McQueen, and author Graham Stew- art, before embarking on a train ride -- appropriately pulled by an NZR steam locomotive. At more than 330 pages, The NZR Steam Locomotive is the largest single volume produced about NZR locomotives to date. The first major book on NZR locomotives appeared in 1957 -- Palmer and Stewart s Cav- alcade of New Zealand Locomotives. At the time it cost 25 shillings, a fortune to a young lad such as Sean Millar on 1s 3d pocket money. As a youngster, Millar used to mock up his own versions in school exercise books. More than 50 years later his dreams have come true. I spent much of my life researching and writing on trans- port, all the time building up an extensive library related to the field. About 12 years ago I began to write this book, assembling material, set- ting up a filing system and undertak- ing additional research. By mid-2009 I had reached the point requiring concerted effort, and after cautious counsel, I proceeded. While respectful of those who have gone before, my work often challenges convention, and this book is no exception. There were times when the sheer magnitude of the project tempted me to give up, but the passion of the project won through. The New Zealand Railways fleet consisted of about 1075 steam locomotives. The book features all the various classes, with more than 600 photographs illustrating the evolution of each class over the years. It will be a must have for many interested in New Zealand Railways. The book is on sale nationwide through bookshops and the New Zea- land Railway and Locomotive Society website railsoc.org.nz at $75. HV Singers to do Jenkins' mass, The Armed Man The Hutt Valley Singers are present- ing a concert of choruses and arias from opera and oratorio with Carl Jenkins The Armed Man: a mass for peace as the main work. Soloists will be Imogen Thirwall and Robert Baker with pianists Karen Boyce and Mary Horner. Joanne Roelofs will conduct the con- cert which will be on Sunday, November 20, at St Margaret s Church, Dunns Rd, Silverstream, at 2.30pm. Admission is adults $12, children $6. Afternoon tea will follow the con- cert.
