Upper Hutt will be hosting New Zealand's first heavy metal and rock themed New Year's Festival. Beyond The Black will be held at the Trentham Racecourse on December 31 and about 2000 people are expected to camp and watch 14 loud bands. Local Jenny George is organising the event with Wellington's Medusa Bar owner Tamara Buckland. Ms George, who previously helped run the successful La De Da New Year's festival, says she came up with the idea because there are no major festivals for people who like heavy music. We have got quite a lot of support. I thought hey the bogans should get some- thing, too' because most of them just stay at home and have house parties or things like that.'' The festivals lineup includes Head Like A Hole, Shotgun Alley, Sinate, In Dread Response, Whole Lotta Led, Subtract, Of Blackest Oceans and more. There will also be stalls with food and merchandise. Ms George says tickets are selling fast and the festival will be great for the area. I think it will be off the Richter scale. There's a lot of people that like this sort of music plus it's sort of putting Upper Hutt on the map.'' The festival has the full support of the Upper Hutt City Council, mayor Wayne Guppy and the police, she says. We want the public to know that we are looking out for everyone's safety and the surrounding neighbours. We want to carry this on for years to come. We want to see people coming to Upper Hutt and spending a lot of money on accommodation and other things.'' Tickets start from $30 and are on sale at 1-night.co.nz. Burning bright: Classic rock covers band Spark Plugs featuring former New Zealand rugby seven stars Dallas Seymour, right, play at the Upper Hutt Cossie Club for the first time on Saturday. They have a huge reputation and perform music to dance to by the Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, Elton John, U2, Meatloaf, David Bowie, The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Credence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, Dragon and many more. Fuse entertain on Friday night.
