The November 26 election distilled to 140 characters or less . . . TO THE POINT Some of classic tweets to Zumwohl on the election so far: From Elaine Smith: ''There's been more abuse of polls in this election than the average Friday night at Showgirls.'' From Kyle MacDonald: ''Robyn Malcolm concerned John Key to sell 49 per cent of Hobbiton to Mordor.'' From Craig Ranapia: ''Trusting Treasury predictions is about as wise as letting Kim Kardashian pick your next husband.'' From Dan Slatherley: ''I think I get the Nat's welfare policy now -- it's all a ruse to get the Greens back to work when Gareth Hughes turns five.'' Almost 30 years after New Zealand s infamous snap election, a Hutt Valley distiller is bringing old-fashioned fun and satire back to modern day politics. Ulf Fuehrer s competition asking for quirky tweets on the New Zealand election is gener- ating a huge response. One of the winners last week, for example, came from Rachel Stewart, who tweeted: Anyone seriously considering Banks needs a good dose of Epsom salts. Mr Fuehrer, maker of tra- ditional German schnapps Zum- wohl, says one of his greatest passions in life, apart from schnapps, is politics. Finally, he s found a way to bring the two together through the twitter com- petition. Alcohol and elections have always been an interesting mix. The 84 snap election was effectively born of a whiskey bottle, says Fuehrer, who was in Shanghai last week for a major international boutique spirits trade show. The image of a visibly tipsy Muldoon announcing the election is the best known and most par- odied moment in our political his- tory. Recognising this year s election, hard on the heels of the Rugby World Cup, wasn t attracting a huge amount of public interest, Fuehrer has seized a marketing opportunity by declaring the return of the schnapp election, albeit this time with a modern twist. Fuehrer is giving away a bottle of Zumwohl every day of the cam- paign for the cleverest or funniest tweet about the election. In just the first week, the response had been much stronger than antici- pated, with entries retweeted to more than 100,000 people around the country. Fuehrer says Twitter suited his schnapp election well because it makes it simple for people to par- ticipate, and doesn t require a lot of time or concentration. So far the busiest periods of the schnapp election have been the leaders debates, which he says provide plenty of material. Anyone can join in the schnapp election by following @zumwohl- party and using the #zumwohl hashtag.
