Photo: ROB SCOTT MARATHON- PHOTOS.COM The Kennett brothers mountain bike guide is the biggest yet in every sense, says co-author Simon Kennett. Not only is the eighth edition in a larger format, with bigger photos and altitude maps in colour, but it includes guides to 60 new tracks, including the Bridge to Nowhere route. The book was compiled by Simon, Jonathon and Paul Kennett. We are pretty happy with it, said Simon. We are hoping that it will continue to be one of the best- selling guide books in New Zealand. Kennett said some of the new tracks are thanks to the government s $50 million New Zealand track network pro- gramme and others to a relaxation of Conservation Department pol- icy allowing bikes on some of its tracks at certain times. Basically, the options in the national parks have really opened up. A lot of the new tracks are through beautiful native forest with great bird life. Simon Kennett s favourite new route is the Kaiwhakauka by the Whanganui River. That trail is beautiful because it s a mix of lovely scenery and fascinating history. It also leads to the Bridge to Nowhere route, or downriver to Pipiriki, he said. Classic New Zealand Mountain Bike Ridesis available from book or bike shops and costs $39.90.
