Seasonal cheer and loathing Karaoke king: Heretaunga Players' James Neal plays Gary in A Kick in the Baubles. Heretaunga Play- ers last production for the year con- tinues their tra- dition of presenting well-written pacy comedies featuring local lads and ladies being upstaged by a cunningly placed prop or two. A Kick in the Baubles was writ- ten by Gordon Steel. Director Ruth Sarratt says her talented, hard- working cast and crew bring this warm seasonal story of disastrous Christmas celebrations, horrible family and neighbours and wayward Christmas toys to believ- able, laughable, pitiable life. It s another peaceful Christmas in the Bailey household, and although a Silent Night would be welcome, all is not calm and all is certainly not bright. Frank (Doug Buchanan) is dreading the arrival of his snobbish in-laws (Nicole Smith and Sean Brook-Brazendale) who, along with their mastermind daughter Alex (Teena Cleary) only ever bring a single bottle of wine for the festivities. Throw in a couple of larger-than-life neighbours (James Neal and Monique Ballinger), let the drink flow merrily -- Frank s drink, mind -- and everything is set for a car-crash Christmas. But when Frank and Jean s (played by Ella Kahu) estranged daughter Milly (Gisela Parker) sud- denly appears with her boyfriend (Jesse Evans), the rug is pulled out from underneath the chaos and heartstrings are firmly tugged. The season opens at Heretaunga Players home, The Studio on Ward St on Wednesday, November 23 and runs until Saturday, December 3. Tickets and bookings are through i-SITE, phone 529 2141, Main St, Upper Hutt. Fun at Carols in the Park Carols in the Park will be on Saturday, December 10, at Harcourt Park and hosted by Soul City Church. It will feature a family-oriented, variety enter- tainment show that showcases local and regional talent with a combined primary schools choir, along with usual guests, Santa and Rudolph. Millie takes out national welsh corgi top award A single rail separated Millie of Auckland from Taylor of Upper Hutt to take the overall title at the second Orijen-sponsored Welsh Corgi National Agility Championships in Upper Hutt on Sunday. Handled by Natalie Mahony, Millie, aged six, won the jumpers event and eight-year-old Taylor, handled by Michael Romanos, finished top in the contacts event. Taylor dislodged one more hurdle rail than Millie, recording fastest times in both of the obstacle courses. Mahony and Millie took home the new annual trophy. Other placegetters were cardigan corgis Woody and Dodge, owned by Bridget Smeeton of Feilding, last year s winner. The New Zealand corgi agility champs are the only single-breed agility championships held in New Zealand.
