Photos: COLIN WILLIAMS Hometown hero: Cory Jane shows his gift from the city, a Dane Kingi carving, to the crowd of thousands at the council buildings. An overwhelmed, surprised and humbled'' Cory Jane was feted by thou- sands as hometown rugby fans cel- ebrated the success of their World Cup hero and favourite son. In unparalleled scenes, Upper Hutt people of all ages lined the Main St and crowded Fergusson Dr's council entrance to give respect and love to their man. The turn out was bigger and better than the most optimistic had dared to contemplate. It was more than the Jane himself, who was initially awkward'' about the thought of having his own parade, could believe. A nervous pre-parade tweet from New Zealand's top winger saying he was get- ting his family along, so it looks like heaps of people are there'' proved unnecessary. More than three hours after the formalities were over Jane signed his last autograph to his last well-wisher. This is unreal,'' he told the crowd. He said his three children -- two kings and a little princess'' -- kept him grounded which produced an audible ripple of adoration. Jane said he has always valued the support from his home town in his career. It means so much to get that hometown backing. When people ask me where I'm from I say I'm proud to say I'm from Upper Hutt','' he said to big applause. It was fantastic, it was really over- whelming,'' wife Amie said. On the way up, we were a little bit nervous. We knew there were a lot of people involved as part of the parade, but I don't think we could ever have expected that many people turning out. When we turned on to the Main St we just thought Oh my God','' she says. Cory was overwhelmed, surprised and humbled.'' When Wayne [Guppy] rang me I thought it was both humbling and pretty cool,'' Jane told the Leader, and later the crowd. I think if something is not about me, I can be the life of the party. But if it's just about me, I can be a bit awkward.'' But Saturday's revelry was about both Cory Jane and Upper Hutt and both were big winners.
