HASE A FREE GIFT* CONTINUED Page 14 Fluoride debate for scientists The Ministry of Health has criticised New Plymouth Council for removing the fluoride from its drinking water saying it will be at a cost to individuals and taxpayers due to the increase in tooth decay. That sort of decision should not beputinthehandsofafew scientifically illiterate twats who happen to have been voted onto a local council. Councils are notorious for bowing to pressure from whacko fringe lobbies like the militant anti-fluoridation conspiracy theorists. Now these same nutters are threatening to sue local councils who have added fluoride (Leader November 16). These lovers of pseudo-science need to get lost and take their dishonest data with them. The science has been done. Any decision should be at Government level on the advice of top scientists who have conducted REAL studies. S HADEN, Trentham Wee boy's thumbs- up, to what? Thank you to mayor Wayne Guppy for advising residents of council s position on fluoridating our drinking water. A huge black mark goes to the Hutt Valley DHB for using the lovely picture of the wee boy to promote a noxious substance of which he has no understanding. When he grows up he will have every right to be highly aggrieved with whoever gave permission for his picture to be used in such an off-hand manner. His most likely action is giving the thumbs up to the All Blacks. Those of us who oppose this poisonous compound will be hoping that Fluoridegate Legal Action New Zealand will have success in their efforts to have our drinking water cleaned up. I SIMONS, Birchville Key does not serve electorate Increases to GST whilst tax cuts favour those predominantly in top income brackets. Cuts to education; early childhood, adult education, less funding/places in universities. Then we have implementation of Government untrialled standards on primary schools that educational specialists are against because they don t lift achievement, yet private schools have been given funding. A continuation of failed rogernomics policies; sale of state assets (loss of dividends and equity) whilst assuming the private sector will somehow be motivated to serve the public good in an equitable way and at a reduced cost with better results and prices...yeah right! Then we have attacks on working people. The Government has broken an agreement to work on productivity with employers and unions, has removed people s rights in the first 90 days of employment, with more plans to weaken the ability of working people to gain access to unions for assistance and organise themselves collectively. We ve been told that businesses will go broke and that jobs have been created from the fire at will law . A survey of 200-plus employers can t even substantiate it conclusively. The reality is that many reputable businesses in the Hutt Valley operate successfully without the need to attack laws of natural justice or industry best practice and minimums. The list of harm by this Government is endless. It is imperative we stop the bleed and repair the damage come this election. We need to keep our sitting MP, Chris Hipkins, and can this reliance on a one trick pony party of one -- John Key. He does not serve our electorate. G COLLINS, Kelson Elect a government MP With the General Election looming the minor parties, of which Labour is set to become one shortly, are speculating on the content of other individuals conversations instead of discussing important issues. They obviously have nothing intelligent to contribute to the campaign. In regard to important issues, it s timely that a referendum on the voting system is to be held. This is an opportunity to discard the loathed MMP and be rid of list MPs, a despised aberration, who in many cases could never hope to be elected by a constituency. The minor parties that have only minimal support should also be gone, together with the undue influence some have had under the current system . It s also opportune to state that the Rimutaka electorate should be represented in Government, electing an MP who will be in opposition for the ensuing term is pointless. The incumbent MP probably means well but in opposition, assuming Labour can attract sufficient votes to be the official opposition, he can achieve little if anything for the electorate. With National clearly about to become the Government a National MP who can effectively represent the local point of view will obviously better serve the electorate. It s simply the application of common sense. B J PEARCE, Upper Hutt
