By AMY JACKMAN Matthew Polglase, 16, lived out his dream of sand, surf and theme parks dur- ing a week-long Make-A-Wish trip to the Gold Coast. Matthew, his parents and brother visi- ted Surfer's Paradise, Sea World and Movie World. A highlight of the trip was the special treatment he received on the plane with the captain allowing him to wear his cap and jacket, and give out the lollies to the other passengers. On arrival in the Gold Coast Matthew headed straight for the beach. First we went to the Gold Coast beach and the sand was absolutely beautiful. It felt like brown sugar.'' Matthew chose a trip to the Gold Coast as his wish because he had family there and wanted to see the beaches. He can't wait to go back and has told his mum they should start saving for the next time. I'd love to go back. I would like to go back to the beach.'' The trip was all organised and funded by the Make-A-Wish foundation, which grants the wishes of children with life- threatening medical conditions. Matthew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2008. He fin- ished chemotherapy in July this year and is currently in remission. He is very posi- tive about the next few months. I was given six months from the date I finished chemo for it to come back. But it is gone and it's not coming back.'' Make-A-Wish has granted more than 1000 wishes in New Zealand since it formed in 1986. They currently grant about 160 wishes a year and have more than 100 volunteers. Matthew said the Make-A-Wish people made the whole experience easy. They were awesome. If we had any problems we could just ring them and they would let us know what was going on. I can't thank them enough.''
