This Sunday afternoon Around The Piano presents its Christmas show with guest solo- ist Noel Signal of Waikanae. Signal decided that he wanted to be a singer in 1958 when he was 28 and he was heard by the conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, John Hop- kins, who asked him why have I never heard of you before?'' For the next 10 years Signal was engaged to sing most of the tenor principal roles for the NZSO Orchestra. During that time he sang lead in many major choral productions, including the St Matthew's Passion, Verdi's Requiem, the B Minor Mass and The Messiah. How- ever, with a young family to sup- port, he gave it all away in 1969 to concentrate on his business career. Two years ago when Signal turned 80 he decided to re- launch his singing career. He was interviewed and sang on TVO ne's Close Up pro- gramme, as well as on Good Morning TV and Maori TV. This Sunday afternoon he will be singing for the first time at Around The Piano. We are in for a real treat this weekend -- Noel has an amazing voice, a strong stage presence and a great personality,'' says Around the Piano director David Dell. His accompanist is Patricia Pinfold of Palmerston North, who will also play for the first time at the Upper Hutt show. She will be joined by resident duo Clare Derby and John Mor- rison. Also featured in the show this month are the Take Note Singers, with members drawn from the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti Coast. This will be a bumper show, to help you get into the Christmas mood,'' says Mr Dell. The show will be at the Heretaunga Christian Centre, 51 Lane St, 2pm till 3.30pm. Senior citizens, students $10, adults, waged $12. Pay at the door.
