For the past 30 or 40 years, Stokes Valley Rotary has masterminded the colourful procession of floats and community groups to usher in the festive season. The club's director of community services, Gra- ham Smeaton, estimated a crowd of several thousand lined Stokes Valley Rd on Saturday to watch 45 floats and displays by churches, Scouts, Keas and the three local schools wend their way from the top of the hill down to the shopping centre. There were no mishaps or breakdowns and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves,'' Mr Smeaton said. Mayor Ray Wallace cruised the parade route in a 1928 DeSoto. Santa was busy because that morning he had also waved to the crowds at the Wainuiomata parade. Later in the day, excited children at the Upper Hutt parade were reassured the big guy in red knew where the Hutt Valley was and wasn't going to miss them out when Christmas Eve comes.
