By PRIYANKA BHONSULE She has a sultry, almost instantly recognisable, voice that has slowly become a staple on New Zealand airwaves. Locals can hear that voice live when Ladi6 kicks off her summer tour in Lower Hutt on Boxing Day in a gig with Trinity Roots. Her album Liberation Of hit gold status in New Zealand while its signature song Like Water went platinum. While it will be her first appearance in the Hutt as Ladi6, she performed at the Dowse with her girl rap group Sheelahroc in the RESPECT hip-hop exhibition in 2000. I m absolutely looking for- ward to it [performing in Lower Hutt]; Trinity Roots are one of my favourite bands. After Lower Hutt, she will be touring around summer hotspots such as New Ply- mouth, Mangawhai, Waihi and Mt. Maunganui. I m looking forward to going back to all the places on the summer tour because I feel like we only just got to know them last time. Like in Waihi where we discovered a wonderful water- hole; I want to discover more places like that. Ladi, real name Karoline Tamati, recently returned from a summer European tour with band mates Brent Parks Park and Julien Dyne. This was my second time in Europe and it was great to go back. The schedule was packed with about 60 gigs, including supporting Erykah Badu in Berlin. It was the only show Badu did in Germany and Ladi s comment on her Facebook page -- Highlight of my career so far! -- says it all. She cites Vienna as her favourite city to visit. We got to perform at a beautiful festival [Danube Island] and were well looked after. We stayed in this legendary band hotel where lots of famous artists have stayed so that was cool. It isn t all fun in fancy hotels though, as Ladi recounts her worst gig in what she describes as the ghetto of France . It was at Le Tamanoir in France and the venue was a youth centre. We got there and it was like you re scared you re going to get robbed. The gig started and there were 10 people in the audi- ence. We performed to dead silence. Being true professionals, they completed the set but Ladi says it wouldn t be an understatement to say it was the worst gig of her career. She also thought Switzer- land was underwhelming . But I think it s because I was expecting something com- pletely different. Audiences are the same everywhere though, she says. New Zealand and overseas audiences are sort of similar. People who know and like the songs will get excited when they get played; with a new track they ll be more discern- ing, waiting to see what I can deliver. Next year will be focused on recording a new album and wrapping up loose ends of Lib- eration Of. It s funny because we only finished recording Liberation Of last year but we re ready to move on. It s not like we re sick of it but it s the evolution of artists. We re totally starting from scratch but there s a template of ideas that we have been sit- ting on. We re not defined by genre but by creativity. Ladi6 at Station Village Complex, December 26, tickets from Ticketmaster or venue. More info at ladi6.com
