Recognition for firms as well as long-serving volunteer firefighters The Hutt Valley Fire Support Unit held its annual awards night earlier this month and honoured all the volunteers who have fought fires in the region this year. The International Year of the Volunteer presentations were made by Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy. This year there were five fire- fighters who have volunteered for more than 30 years. Also, a long service and good conduct medal was awarded to station officer Peter Lock by area manager Bernie Rush. Mr Lock has been a volunteer firefighter for 14 years. Mr Rush also presented the employer recognition certificates to the companies and organis- ations which have allowed their staff to be volunteer firefighters. The companies and organis- ations honoured this year were Camson Security Ltd, Cityline, Hutt Valley Ltd, Geni HireQuip, Inland Revenue Department, KiwiRail Passenger, Linfox Logis- tics Ltd, Messines Defence Centre, NZ Wireless Safeworx (WGTN) Ltd, Scott Residential Mainten- ance and Total Telecommuni- cations Ltd. The awards night also saw the presentation of a gold bar to senior station officer David Ackroyd, the president of the Wel- lington, Hutt and Kapiti Fire Brigades Sub Association, for his 33 years of service. Senior station officer Wayne Bedford said the awards night was a highlight of the year. The real highlight was celebrating and recognising our employers with the launch of our employer recognition programme to pay tribute for the support they give to us in the execution of our duties. We coupled this with a presen- tation of International Year of the Volunteer medals and bars to our members recognising Inter- national Year of the Volunteer on December 5.''
