We asked each of the region's mayors and what they had to say off the top of their heads offers an interesting insight into what issues were occupying their attention. Wayne Guppy Ray Wallace Nicholas Leggett Celia Wade-Brown Ron Mark Garry Daniell Adrienne Staples Jenny Rowan We wish for... Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy Prosperity I think for everyone that it's that the economic climate picks up and we can start creating some jobs. I think that is import- ant for everyone. Flowing from that you get other developments and other things happening.'' Lower Hutt mayor Ray Wallace Happiness, peace and prosperity I think for everyone -- well obviously peace and happiness for everybody, and hopefully that the economy will start to pick up so all sectors of the community can benefit. There have been a lot of sectors of the community that have been hurting over the last couple of years. Let's hope that picks up and everybody can benefit from it.'' Porirua mayor Nicholas Leggett Warm, well-fed children It would be that we get a co-ordinated solution to ending child poverty and improving the options for kids in Porirua.'' Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown Everything For the world -- On-going global commit- ment to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions''. For New Zealand -- Economic growth that is compatible with increasing social cultural and environmental wellbeing''. For Wellington -- increase in jobs, earthquake protection started for Town Hall, a successful Hobbit premiere telling Wellington's story, a commitment from the Regional Transport Committee to fund the Great Harbour Way and for Zealandia to be on a sustainable footing.'' For herself -- Get fit -- run round the bays, be a better scuba diver, improve my te reo Maori and meet more Wellingtonians in all walks of life.'' Carterton mayor Ron Mark Peace, harmony and goodwill That people would treat people as they would wish to be treated themselves, at all levels, community, local government, cen- tral government.'' Masterton mayor Garry Daniell Water For the Wairarapa irrigation project to be on fast track. That would probably bring 10,000 jobs over the course of time.'' South Wairarapa District mayor Adrienne Staples Bridges and roads A new Waihenga Bridge and some corners off the Rimutaka 4 Hill Rd. I think it would make a big difference to our com- munity.'' Kapiti Coast District mayor Jenny Rowan Happiness and safety Wishing everyone a safe and happy time, with the hope that we can reduce the incidence of domestic and community viol- ence on the Kapiti Coast.'' Bowls club celebrates centenary with big win Bowls Upper Hutt have finished the year in winning style. The club's fours team of Steve Leitch (skip), Jim Bullen, Maurice Pickard and Rhys Wanden made the 2011-12 season and the club's centenary year one to remember by winning the Wellington Open Fours championship. The final, decided by a single point, was an all upper valley affair too. In the end Leitch's team won 12-11 in heading off the neigh- bouring Silverstream team skipped by Ian Opray. The Wellington Open Fours attracts the top teams in the Wel- lington Centre. We're absolutely delighted to have won a centre title for Upper Hutt and it's especially satisfying in the club's centenary year,'' Leitch says. Another Upper Hutt club team featured strongly in the championship play with the winning Leitch combination having to dispatched clubmates skipped by Kevin Marnane, in a quarterfinal. They won this local derby'' 21-13 before beating Raymond Martin's powerful Victoria team 18-15 in the semi and going on to the final.
