Upper Hutt Leader : May 9th 2012
43 UPPER HUTT LEADER, MAY 9, 2012 LOST 2 matching diamond & garnet rings, Queen St & ANZ Bank Ph 526 8833 Notification of Aerial Control Works - Application of a Vertebrate Toxic Agent Rimutaka Range Aerial Project The Greater Wellington Regional Council's BioWorks Unit wishes to advise the Vertebrate Toxic Agent (VTA) Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) in green dyed pellet baits will be laid by helicopter from Tuesday, 22 May 2012 or as soon as practicable thereafter within the project boundary described below. This project is being undertaken to control possums and covers approximately 28,000 hectares. The project borders the Tararua Ranges at the Kaitoke Basin and extends in a southerly direction to include a large portion of the Rimutaka Range. Possum Baits Green dyed cereal bait containing 1080 poison will be used. Baits weigh approximately 10 grams and are 20mm in diameter. They will be distributed at a rate of 2kg per hectare. Prior to the application of 1080 baits, non-toxic feed baits will be sown at a rate of 1.5kg per hectare. These baits are light tan in colour. Project Boundary The northern boundary adjoins the Hutt River and includes the surrounding bush habitat of the Kaitoke Basin, the boundary crosses State Highway 2 at the Rimutaka Summit. The eastern boundary encompasses the Owhanga Catchment, and follows the Department of Conservation and farmland boundary in a southwesterly direction towards the Mukamuka Stream at Ocean Beach. The western boundary follows the first main ridgeline back towards the Papatahi Crossing, going over Mt Matthews and North Saddle, it follows the Papatahi Crossing until the track meets the Orongorongo River and then follows the Regional Council/Department of Conservation boundary along East Whakanui Track and Whakanui Track. The boundary then encompasses Regional Council land used for the Wainuiomata Orongorongo Water Collection Area, including Reservoir Road and the main catchments of Skull Gully Stream, Wainuiomata River West Branch and East Branch, to the top of the Orongorongo River at the Narrow Neck. The boundary heads in a northerly direction towards Mt Climie (862m), where the lower slopes are included. The boundary is slightly to the east of the Mt Climie Trig Track, Tanes Track and Station Drive. The operation avoids Tunnel Gully picnic area and Plateau Road before heading towards the airstrip north of Goat Rock and Trig 8409 near State Highway 2. The operational area includes the Rimutaka Rail Trail. Public Warnings Public Warning notices will be placed at all main access points where 1080 baits are applied. People are advised not to handle any bait or interfere with warning notices and to keep children and pets (especially dogs) away from the treatment areas. Possum carcasses poisoned with 1080 pose a danger to dogs until the fleshy parts have completely broken down. Our advice is not to take any dogs into an area treated with 1080 poison until warning signs have been removed. The public are advised not to handle or eat animals from this area. Hunters must heed all restrictions included in the Hunter Permit Pesticides Summaries, including not taking animals for consumption. Public Enquiries Members of the public are welcome to view operational maps or seek information on progress by contacting the BioWorks Team Leader or Field Supervisor at Greater Wellington at 34 Chapel Street, Masterton or by telephone on 06 378 2484 during normal working hours. That Council be elected by the electors of the district as a whole; 2. That the total number of Councillors be elected to remain at 10; and 3. That Council not constitute any Communities.
