Chinese-American pianist: Jian Liu. The 2012 Classical Expressions series continues with the cello and piano recital Cellissimo in the Gen- esis Energy Theatre at Expressions on Monday, September 3, at 7.30pm. Israeli cellist Inbal Megiddo and Chinese-American pianist Jian Liu arrived in Wellington to teach at the New Zealand School of Music. Both artists come with impressive performance reputations and their programme is sure to delight the Classical Expressions audience. The concert begins with a sonata by the 18th-century Italian cello vir- tuoso turned composer Luigi Boc- cherini, one of 30 sonatas he wrote for the instrument. Beethoven's career was starting to blossom just as the cello was taking over from the viola da gamba as the principal bass string instrument. The 12 Variations on a Theme by Handel and Sonata No 4 in the pro- gramme are fine examples of Beeth- oven's cello works. After interval Megiddo and Liu's selection is an eclectic mix of musical ages and styles beginning with Spiegel im Spiegel by the Estonian composer Arvo Part, written in 1978. Israeli composer Hanna Levy wrote Eretz for Megiddo in celebration of Israel's 50th anniversary. In an arrangement by Russian cello virtuoso and teacher Gregor Piatigorsky is a charming set of Schubert variations originally for piano four-hands. The programme ends with a real romp, Castelnuovo- Tedesco's Concert-Rhapsodie on music from Rossini's Barber of Seville. Tickets from Expressions 527 2168 website: expressions.org.nz.
